Sony Ericsson W910 review: Walkman in style

The Sony Ericsson W910 reinforced the Walkman ranks with a suave, yet strong performer. The thin and elegant slider does look the part, while HSDPA (3.6 Mbps) and Walkman 3.0 are the right features to expect in a high-end device. At first glance, the W910 brings a few brand new software and hardware solutions to the scene. Stay with us as we go beyond the disarming looks and try to determine whether Sony Ericsson W910 has what it takes to win the hearts of the customers.

Fashion-savvy Edge concept phone

The concept phone below, entitled Edge, designed by Chris Owens, which seems to be aimed at the fashion-conscious consumer. The keypad is made of glass, and draws back in, when the handset is idle. The screen is touch-sensitive – this is becoming quite popular it would seem, plus it occupies nearly the entire real estate of the front fascia. The handset has a very glossy look to it, which isn't to everyone's taste. Obviously, as with most phones these days, there's a camera on the back.

Live pics of SE low-end slider

There is another leakage of “live” pics with a cellphone probably upcoming from Sony Ericsson. We’ve got almost no info on its specs – looking at the picture we see a slider phone dressed in metallic housing, which is compact, but not too slim. According to the source, this is a low-end handset with a 1.3-megapixel camera. Probably, we’ll hear other details at the official announcement or from the next info leakage.

S11HT (EMONSTER) or HTC TyTN II for Japan’s EMOBILE

EMOBILE, a young 3G operator in Japan, has launched preorders (effective from March 1) for the S11HT communicators with a threatening name “EMONSTER”. Other regions know this device under the name of HTC TyTN II. The operator timed the sales of the communicator to the launch of voice services in its networks. EMOBILE was positioned as the carrier of HSDPA data transfer services and thus lacked voice ones.

Reportedly, the S11HT runs on a Japanese version of Windows Mobile 6 Professional Edition and is the first smartphone in Japan with GPS onboard.

The short technical specs of the S11HT (EMONSTER):

Slide-out QWERTY-keyboard

Nokia morph phone concept

Nokia's Morph nanotechnology concept, developed by Nokia Research Centre, and England's University of Cambridge, has been put on display, at The Museum of Modern Art, in New York, USA.

Morph is basically a concept, showing how mobile phones could be in the future – stretching, and flexing the phone into different shapes. But, ultimately, the technology inside the morph concept shows off transparent electronics, and, self-cleaning surfaces.

Hopefully, elements of the Morph concept should be available in handsets, within the next seven years, obviously, in high-end devices, to begin with. The nanotechnology will hopefully allow for integrating complex functionality at a low price. Learn more about what the Morph can do here.

GSM/UMTS-smartphone Nokia N82 - Nokia Mobile Information

Mobile-review have posted their review on the Nokia N82. Here is the final impression.

Impressions
Call quality was never an issue with the N82, as it easily lived up to our expectations of a Nokia-branded phone. Ring tones sounded quite loud thanks to the handset’s dual speakers – in this sense, it is one of the market’s vociferous offerings. On the other hand, sometimes both speakers, since they are located on the right, get covered with something, making the sound come out muffled. The vibro alert was on the stronger side.

Has Nokia hit the bull’s eye with this model? It is absolutely safe to say this handset will appeal to the masses and will be a truly sought-after offering – the N82 definitely has what it takes and just like the Nokia N73 a year ago, it is on its way to the title of the most affordable and decent Nokia-branded imaging-minded solution. Its music department is no different from the Nokia N95 8Gb, meaning that it proves to be somewhat inferior to the Nokia N81. Still, your music experience with the N82 won’t be irritating or dismal. Omitted remote control is another hint at the handset’s true positioning.

Given its current retail price of 450 Euro, the N82 is up against the Sony Ericsson K850i alone. Which one to go for, I hear you ask? It will be one tough decision for you, better listen to what your experience of playing around with either of the phones tells you. For the owners of the Nokia N95, the N82 won’t break any new ground – by and large it is the same old N95, yet with some of its shortcomings mitigated and more RAM onboard. The Sony Ericsson’s solution costs less, but offers less punch as well. Even if you don’t really need GPS navigation, the N82 is worth a glance for having a higher potential and better out-of-the-box abilities sweetened by more conventional ergonomics.

Shedding some light on myths and rumors circulating around the web on an impending music-savvy edition of the N82 carrying 8Gb onboard, I have to say this is very unlikely in view of the handset’s positioning. It already has a rival, which can only dream of 8Gb of storage. Looking at Nokia’s range you may well come to a conclusion that the arrival of a handset like this retailing for 70 Euro more would be fine if only they didn’t have the Nokia N95 on offer. Which won’t happen for at least 7-8 months to come. Just like the Nokia N73, the N82 doesn’t have any sort of 8 or 4 Gb variations.

Winding our story up, I can say only one thing that you probably already know anyway. The company has rolled out a true bestseller in the form of the N82, which is now among the finest smartphones in the entire NSeries, as well as one of the top handsets for youth, the best cameraphone around (on the mass market) and also one of the most potent business-minded handsets. Curiously, the “best” prefix has stuck to this model, and, in one way or another, it has deserved it.

Starting January 2008, Mobile-Review.com will be picking best products of the month, with awards handed out around the end of each month. And in January 2008 our sympathy is with the Nokia N82, undoubtedly the best buy among all today’s offerings in this class.

The Nokia N82’s SAR level – 0,62 W/kg

P.S. Wait, we got some more before the curtains fall:

http://locr.com/
http://www.gpsed.com/
http://www.shozu.com/portal/
As you have already guess, with these services you can get coordinates for your snaps, if you took them with enabled GPS on an NSeries device. These services seamlessly deal with the Nokia N82 and other smartphones as well.

Well, no more. In spirit of true empathy Nokia has a remedy for Murphy’s victims. A small module named SU33 will work as a GPS receiver enabling you to access free and pay channels offered by the DVB-H.
Sony Ericsson’s new Z310 is a mirror-finish clamshell phone - Sony Ericsson Mobile Information

At the end of the year 2006 Sony Ericsson introduces their latest product. The new Z310i is the new eye-catching clamshell in three special colors and with mirror- and light effects. by Marc Rutten

For a phone that reflects your style whether you’re at work or at play, picture yourself with the new Sony Ericsson Z310. Announced today, this stand-out phone has a flawless, polished finish. The front icon display is integrated into the design, hidden discretely beneath the surface until a message or call is received. There are even eye-catching coloured light effects that can be assigned to contacts in the phonebook so you can know at a glance who is calling.

The seamless, semi-transparent finish on the front of the phone allows the display icons (which signal when a new event takes place on the phone) to be ‘hidden’ beneath the surface. And a separate external display, also concealed under the surface of the phone, lets you know exactly who is calling.

Adding to the striking design is a series of novel light effects that serve to both personalise the phone &amp allow the user to ‘colour code’ their contacts. Simply assign a coloured light to your frequent callers and you will know instantly whether its work trying to reach you, your best friend fixing a date, or your mother calling to invite you to Sunday lunch! It is even possible to set the look and feel of the menu &amp screen display to match the time of day a bright theme during the daytime and something more relaxing or subtle at night.

Although straightforward to use, the Z310 is loaded with features to help you organise your life and have fun along the way. The built-in VGA camera allows you to take spontaneous snaps and share them with family and friends instantly via Picture Blogging (uploading pictures directly to a Blog site from the Z310) or Picture Messaging (MMS). Alternatively, just use the phone as a portable photo album to make sure that your memories are always with you.

And there’s no need to worry if you can’t find your phone in your bag or under that pile of papers! Just link the Z310 to a Bluetooth headset, such as the comfortable &amp compact HBH-PV705 Headset, and you are likely to never miss a call.
You can choose the Z310 in the colour that best fits your lifestyle and your wardrobe. This luscious phone comes in three very individual colours: Jet Set Black, Blush Bronze or Lush Pink.

Enjoy the ultimate wireless audio quality the Sony Ericsson HBH-DS970 - Sony Ericsson Mobile Information

Sony Ericsson has shown a large amount of Walkman products during the past year. Next to this set of mobile phones several accessories have been introduced. Between those you will find the HBH-DS970 a wireless stereo Bluetooth headset. by Marc Rutten

Sony Ericsson has shown a large amount of Walkman products during the past year. Next to this set of mobile phones several accessories have been introduced. For example special music desk stands with build-in speakers, but also several headsets. One of these headsets is the new HBH-DS970 a wireless stereo Bluetooth headset.

The headset has not the same set-up as the BT620s from Jabra, but consists of two separate earplugs which will be placed in the ear. Both are connected via a wire that can be placed around the neck of the user and a remote control with build-in display. The DS970 is the latest wireless stereo Bluetooth headset from Sony Ericsson and is being delivered next to several other Walkman models as the W810i, W850i and W950i.

The style in which the headset is being build shows a clear relation with the Walkman range. The colour set-up used shows familiarities with other products shown by the Swedish manufacturer. The black and orange style with silver accents is exactly the same as what has been shown on for instance the W950i.

Both earplugs make use of the In-ear concept. It enhances the bass sound quality, however not every user will be that satisfied wearing the In-ear headset. People should make a distinctive choice for this concept. The headset fits better than the standard version delivered with all Walkman phones.

The Sony Ericsson HBH-DS970 is a Bluetooth stereo headset, which supports the profiles Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) and Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP). Both profiles are essential while listening music and controlling the music player using a wireless connection. Via our search function you can enter the Bluetooth A2DP profile which sets up the wireless connection and generate a list of mobile phones which support this feature. Tip: Use the Advanced specifications and details setting!

The profile AVRCP makes it possible to change the setting start, pause, forward and previous inside the music player via the headset and the wireless connection. What does it mean? People do need to use wired headsets that lie around and mess up your desk or pocket. But you can wear a trendy headset which gives you hifi stereo audio such as the Sony Ericsson HBH-DS970!

The audio quality of the Sony Ericsson HBH-DS970 is quite good, but really depends on the device you connect the headset to and the available options that enhance the sound quality. When you use the headset with for instance Sony Ericsson products you will notice that the quality is superb. People get the feeling they use a wired headset in stead of a wireless version. It is a true art! The quality is unsurpassed.

Also the use of an equalizer during operation is possible. The headset addresses the changes made in the player and changes the sound quality. On the remote control the user can rewind or forward to a different song, adjust the volume, pause the music player or block the controls. By using the build-in display it is possible to check the number playing and the height of the volume.

Watch the video of the Sony Ericsson HBH-DS970 and check how the headset will be controlled!

Phone conversations can also be taken care off with this headset. It works as it should be. In the beginning it is quite difficult to find the phone control key because it is between the left ear and left shoulder. You would expect it to be on remote control and not between your ear and shoulder. But after you found the key there is no problem in using it.

The weight of the headset lies around the 27 grams and that is reasonably light for a Bluetooth headset. The headset has a maximum of 300 hours standby time and a call time of 6 hours. No bad values for this music headset. Charging is conducted via the standard charger which is delivered with several other accessories and which you can use to charge any Sony Ericsson device.

Do you want to listen music without wires that lie around and mess up your desk or pocket and the freedom of moving around and switching between your incoming calls and your favorite music? That is the prevailing choice that needs to be taken by any user buying this headset! Then the HBH-DS970 is the best stereo Bluetooth headset on the market available. Together with a Walkman product like the W950i it is the best combination possible when you look at listening music via a wireless headset.

This is an HSDPA capable phone, meaning that the Z770i is a 3.5G device capable of high-speed internet access. Although web access on a mobile phone is not usually much fun, the Z770i comes with the NetFront web browser which attempts to bring a more PC-like environment to the mobile phone platform.

The Z770i has a 2.2" 240 x 320 pixel display, Bluetooth 2.0, a USB connection, microSD expandable memory, an FM radio, MP3 player, a two megapixel camera and an impressively long battery life that might well appeal to corporate customers. The Z770i also supports push email from Microsoft Exchange servers.

There are three colour combinations, Vogue Red, Graphite Black, Exquisite Golden. The silvery coloured handset in the pictures is actually Vogue Red, so it is hard to judge just what the other devices look like.

We mentioned battery life, and for a 3G phone it is pretty good. Talktime is a maximum of 4 hours, and if you are only using the Z770i on GSM then this increases to 8.5 hours. Standby time is around 14 days.

&nbsp

It's a very stylish looking device, and at 91 grams and 93 x 48 x 16mm in size the Z770i is pretty compact for a 3.5G phone.

Our biggest gripe is the keypad - a combination of dead flat keys and a stylish but possibly quite annoying navigation pad might not be to everyone's tastes. While it is certainly the case that the Z770i looks as good on the inside as it does on the outside, it is likely that some people would prefer a more traditional arrangement.

Sony Ericsson say that the Z770i should be available during Q2 2008, but did not give any guidance on pricing.

Nokia's third generation Internet&nbsp tablet, the Nokia N810 adds a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, GPS and a new operating system to the excellent 800-pixel wide touchscreen display and WiFi connectivity found in the previous&nbsp N800 and 770 devices.
As with the N800 and 770, it's important to remember that the N810 isn't&nbsp a phone - it connects to the Internet using either WiFi or a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. Our experience with previous models tells us that it can be just about any type of handset, not just a Nokia.

It's a big device - coming in at 226 grams, it weighs about the same as the original 770, or slightly more than the later N800 or roughly comparable Nokia E90. Physically, the N810 measures 72 x 128 x 14mm and the tablet is dominated by the very large 4.1" 800 x 480 pixel display. If you haven't seen this type of high resolution screen before, then you'll be blown away.. remember that most similar devices are stuck with 320 x 240 pixels, and at 800 pixels across most web pages will display exactly as they do on a PC.

One key advantage in having the big screen in a separate device to your phone is that you can have a normal size device as a mobile, and you only need to take the N810 out with you when you need it.

It's a Linux device, running a brand new OS2008 version of the Maemo operating system. This adds a Mozilla-based web browser, enhanced Adobe Flash support, Windows Media Player compatibility, the Nokia Maps application, VOIP SIP call support and a new user interface. Owners of the N800 will be able to upgrade their software to the OS2008 version, although sadly the old 770 cannot be updated. There are plenty of free applications available for download for the Maemo platform, so the N810 should have a wide range of software add-ons available.

The overall design of the N810 is a bit sleeker than the N800 - the video calling camera is now more traditionally mounted on the front, the seldom used navigation pad has been moved to the QWERTY keyboard and the other controls are mounted on the edge of the device so that they can be reached easily. As with the N800, the N810 Internet Tablet comes with a built-in stand. You don't have to use the physical keyboard as text can be entered directly onto the N810's screen with a finger or stylus.

Internal memory is 128MB of DDR RAM plus&nbsp 256MB Flash. Up to 2GB of Flash storage is available for data, and the Nokia N810 supports SD cards up to 2GB and SDHC cards up to 8GB. The processor is a TI OMAP 2420 running at 400 MHz. The battery should be good for about 4 hours web browsing over the LAN, 10 hours of music playback or 14 days standby time.

Nokia are touting the N810 as a "Web 2.0" device, capable of accessing YouTube, Skype, Facebook and other popular destinations. Older versions of Nokia's Internet Tablets did struggle with these, so this is certainly an improvement.

At the moment Nokia have given US pricing and availability only, the N810 will cost around $479 plus tax (so perhaps £250 / €350 in Europe) and will be available from mid-November 2007.

Nokia N81 and N81 8GB - Nokia Mobile Information

Remember the Nokia N-Gage? Nokia's original attempt at a gaming platform fell a bit flat in most (but not all) markets and largely sank without trace. But Nokia didn't give up on the idea of advanced mobile gaming, and now it's back with a vengeance on the Nokia N81 plus some other smartphone devices in the Nokia range.

So what exactly makes up the Nokia N81? Well, this is a 3G slider with a 2.4" 240 x 320 pixel display that works in landscape (wide) and portrait (tall) orientations. On the back is a 2 megapixel camera, and the N81 also has WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity which can also be used for gaming. There's an FM radio too, and the N81 runs the Symbian S60 operating system, making it a capable smartphone.

Nokia say that&nbsp the keys light up when you use them, and they are also optimised for playing games in landscape mode as well as playing multimedia and all the other smartphone functions. As you'd expect, there's a web browser and email client and the Nokia N81 can also place VOIP calls (if your carrier has not disabled the functionality). There's a navigation wheel, and the N81's interface has had an overhaul to make it more dynamic.

Some effort has gone into integrating the N81 with <span style="text-decoration: underline ! As you might suspect, the N81 8GB comes with 8GB of internal memory, whereas the cheaper standard N81 uses microSD memory expansion.

Games for the N81 can be downloaded from Nokia's N-Gage Arena&nbsp for a typical fee of €6-€10. Some of these can be played against others using the internet or WLAN connection. The N-Gage gaming platform isn't limited to the N81 either, owners of the N73, N93, N93i, N95 and N95 8GB can join in too.

It's quite a heavy phone at 140 grams in weight and 102 x 50 x 17.9mm in size. Talktime is up to 3 hours on 3G and 4 hours on GSM, with a maximum standby time of around 16 days. Alternatively, you can play music on it for up to 11.5 hours.

Nokia say that the N81 and N81 8GB should be available during Q4 2007 at an estimated cost before tax and subsidy of €430 / £290 for the N81 8GB and around €360 / £250 for the more basic N81.

Following on from last year's original TyTN model, the HTC TyTN II is even more feature packed than the original version, with an impressive technical specification that puts it head-to-head with the Nokia E90.

A quick tour of what's in the HTC TyTN II should whet the appetites of most gadget fans - this is a 3G phone with HSDPA high-speed data, a large 2.8" 240x320 pixel touchscreen display, slide-out QWERTY keyboard with a clever hinge mechanism, WiFi, a 3 megapixel primary camera, microSD expandable memory plus inbuilt GPS with a copy of TomTom Navigator 6 taster edition installed. The TyTN II runs Windows Mobile 6 Professional, which means that it comes with a wide&nbsp array of software, and HTC have also customised the Windows installation with their own HTC Home screen to make it easier to use.

It does look a lot like the Nokia E90 when opened, but the TyTN II's display is not as high resolution as its Nokia rival.. on the other hand, the TyTN has a touchscreen which is sorely lacking in the E90. On the back is a 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, plus a secondary camera for video calling. This is pretty much equivalent to the E90, and then on top of that is a basic GPS system that can be upgraded to full satellite navigation for a fee. With SatNav, the TyTN II is likely to make full advantage of the smartphone's large touchscreen.

The software suite that comes with Windows Mobile 6 Professional&nbsp is pretty familiar - there are pocket versions of Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus a version of Internet Explorer and Windows Media player. HTC have added their "HTC Home" interface, plus a business card scanner and as we said earlier, the TyTN II is also bundled with a taster TomTom installation.

Connectivity is a strong point of the TyTN II, with tri-band UMTS,&nbsp HSDPA (3.5G), quad-band GSM, GPRS and EDGE network support, plus 802.11b/g WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0. You can connect the TyTN II to a PC with a USB cable, and there's a&nbsp microSD memory slot too.

Nokia's replacement for the aging N73, the Nokia N78 is an HSDPA capable 3.5G handset, with a 3.2 megapixel camera, aGPS and built-in WiFi. It's a sleek looking smartphone running the Symbian S60 operating system, in common with most other N-Series devices.

As with all the Nokia handsets announced at Mobile World Congress 2008, the Nokia N78 has a much improved GPS system, with several improvements for those who want to navigate on foot. Photographs taken with the camera can also be geotagged with the location automatically, a feature that has been missing for some time.

While we're on the subject of the camera, the Nokia N78 has a 3.2 megapixel unit with a Carl Zeiss lens, autofocus and an LED flash. This combination of features has proven to be very capable in the past.

This is a dual-band HSDPA /WCDMA phone with quad-band GSM support, plus GPRS and EDGE data. WiFi connectivity is built-in too, as is stereo Bluetooth and USB 2.0. In other words, the Nokia N78 has plenty of fast connections to the outside world.

The N78 comes with a multimedia player capable of handing MPEG-4, MP3, WMA and AAC clips. Video capture is VGA resolution at 15 frames per second, not quite as good as some other recent Nokias, but still pretty good. There's also an FM radio and integrated stereo speakers. The Nokia N78 comes with a &nbsp useful FM transmitter, so it is possible to connect it to a car stereo using just the radio, where this it is legal to do so.

This looks like a decent phone, but there's a fly in the ointment. Nokia have gone all trendy with the keypad - the key legends light up when in use, and the keys themselves have been replaced with a sort of bar arrangement. It looks good, but we suspect that it won't be as easy to use as a traditional arrangement.

The battery life is pretty reasonable - the Nokia N78 has just over 3 hours talktime on 3G with up to 13 days standby time. This is helped by a large 1200 milli amp hour&nbsp BL-6F power cell. The N78 features up to 24 hours of audio playback time.

It's a much cheaper phone than the new N96, coming in at around €350 (£230 / $460) before tax and subsidy. It is a very similar price to the Nokia 6220 Classic which has a better camera and more conventional layout, but lacks WiFi or an FM transmitter.

Nokia say that the N78 will be available during Q2 2008.

Nokia N96 - Nokia Mobile Information

Nokia's flagship N-Series device and replacement for the popular N95, the Nokia N96 adds more features than ever before in an attractive package that looks good too.

Although this handset is crammed full of technology on the inside, let us first look at the outside of the Nokia N96 to get a feel for the device.

As with the N95, the Nokia N96 is a two-way slider. Slide the phone one way and you see a standard numeric keypad, slide it the other way and the N96 comes up with media control keys. Also immediately obvious is the large 2.8" 320 x 240 pixel display, very similar to the panel in the N95 8GB. On the back of the N96 is a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash and a Carl Zeiss lens. In addition, there is a clever stand mechanism built into the camera surround (see left) that allows the N96 to be propped up when in use.

Underneath the large screen is an enhanced navigation pad and control keys. Overall, these improvements combined with the sleek design make the Nokia N96 a very elegant looking device, much more so than the previous model.

The Nokia N96 also has integrated aGPS (advanced GPS). Nokia have spent some considerable time working on the N96's satellite navigation capabilities and they are now much better than the original N95. The N96 is capable of helping you navigate in the car, or when travelling on foot. One drawback with the N96 is that it lacks a touchscreen, which will make the N96 harder to control

A surprising addition to the Nokia N96 is the inclusion of a DVB-H digital TV receiver. This means that the N96 can be used to watch live broadcast TV over the air, if you have DVB-H coverage in your area.

Internal memory is a massive 16GB, expandable to 32GB using a microSD memory card. With that much memory, you may not even need to bother expanding it. The memory has been boosted in order to use the Nokia N96 as a video player, which is also the reason for the integrated stand that we announced earlier.

We mentioned the camera earlier, it seems almost identical to the excellent unit found in the N95. The Carl Zeiss optics make a significant difference to picture quality, more so that just the megapixel count. Also, the Nokia N96 can capture VGA resolution video at 30 frames per second. Photographs are automatically tagged with the location from the GPS receiver - so not only can you use this to help you remember where you were when you took the photo, but certain picture sharing services can automatically read the GPS location data and relate them to mapping applications.

The Nokia N96 can play back MPEG-4, WMV9 (Windows Media), Flash Video and H.264 video, plus MP3, AAC and WMA audio types. As we mentioned before, the Nokia N96 has a DVB-H receiver, and it also comes with a FM radio with RDS. The N95 has a standard 3.5mm jack plug for audio output plus TV output.

                          while driving.

Of course, the Nokia N96 has a web browser, but now it has full Flash support. It also has an RSS news reader and email client. It will be able to integrate with Nokia's N-Gage gaming platform in the future too.

One vital thing with any mobile phone is connectivity. This is a dual-band 3G phone with HSDPA support, quad-band GSM with GPRS and EDGE plus WiFi. The Nokia N96 supports stereo Bluetooth and high-speed USB 2.0. Sadly, the N96 lacks an FM transmitter, but the inclusion of a standard jack plug should help for in-car connectivity.

It's a little wider and heavier than the N95, the Nokia N96 comes in at 125 grams and it measures 103 x 55 x 18mm. Maximum talktime on 3G is 2.5 hours with 9 days standby time. In offline mode, the Nokia N96 should be good for 14 hours of music playback, 5 hours of video or 4 hours of TV.

Nokia say that the N96 should be available during Q3 2008 at an estimated price of €550 (around £370 or $740) before tax and subsidy at launch.

This is a highly impressive device, and it looks to be a worthy successor to the N95. Yes, we would like to see a touchscreen and an FM transmitter, but it's hard to fault this device when it comes to features. Expect this one to fly off the shelves when it hits the shops later this year.

Sony Ericsson W910 snatches Best Handset award - Sony Ericsson Mobile Information

The Sony Ericsson W910 Walkman phone is the best handset for 2007, and we have the GSM Association's word on that. The high-end music handset won a tight group of nominees in the Best Mobile Handset or Device category.

Busy as we've been giving you the future stars, the 13th Annual Global Mobile Awards of the GSM Association proved a more than welcome chance to slow down and look back at the time-tested achievers, which back in 2007 used to have the spotlight all to themselves.

Sony Ericsson W910

Well, last night in Barcelona it was less about the star debuts, as the GSM association announced the winners in fifteen categories. Quite as expected, we were keen to see who walks with the gold in the Best Mobile Handset or Device. It was a tight game with 3 Skypephone, LG KU990 Viewty, Nokia 6500 classic and Samsung G600 putting pressure on the Walkman W910.

Nokia 6500 classic • LG KU990 Viewty • Samsung G600

The judges believed Sony Ericsson W910 deserved the Best Mobile Handset or Device title for being "… a superb all-rounder. A compelling, easy to use design that has captured the imagination of consumers around the world in 2007." For what we made of it back in the day, please feel free to revisit our extended Sony Ericsson W910 review.

The Best Mobile Handset or Device category was the only one with a consolation prize. Hutchison 3 and Skype were given a good pat on the shoulder as their 3 Skypephone got highly commended. The judges appreciated that "… in addition to the headline Skype service, the phone offers extremely good value for money with a wide range of features not previously seen at this price point."

Samsung F480 - Samsung Mobile Information

Next Samsung's booth hosted the full-touch UI-based Samsung F480. The 2.8" 262K color display of Samsung F480 is really one of great quality. The phone also features a 5 megapixel auto focus camera, 3G with HSDPA and tri-band GSM network coverage. All that functionality is packed in the very small dimensions of 95.9 x 55 x 11.5 mm.

Samsung F480 looks like the Armani

However, the best part about Samsung F480 is not functionality. Instead, the strength of this little baby lies in the great user interface, which is one of the best Samsung efforts so far.

Beside the eye-catching graphics, semi transparent overlays and the rich animations, Samsung F480 offers the so called desktop widgets. Those are info applications that reside on your desktop. They are fully configurable, and movable around the screen.

Samsung F480 is first to use the new Samsung full touch UI with widgets

The navigation solution used at the bottom of the screen is also very interesting and pleasant to work with. It is very responsive and we really liked it.

Samsung G810 - Samsung Mobile Information

The most prominent announcement is undoubtedly the Samsung G810. The nice 2.6" display and 5 megapixel camera are just the icing of the cake. The phone also features xenon flash and 3x optical zooming capabilities.

Samsung G810 - a take at Nokia N95?

The rich connectivity options of Samsung G810 include 3G with HSDPA support, EDGE, Bluetooth v2.0 (A2DP also included), USB v2.0 and even a 3.5mm audio jack. Add Wi-Fi and the GPS for navigation and geo-tagging and you get a very tempting gadget indeed.

The best part is that - unlike its predecessor, Samsung G800 - the G810 is a Symbian smartphone, running on the S60 user interface - much like Nokia N95.
